At an altitude of 300m, Yuelu Mountain is a popular park for hiking. Even though the mountain is located in a subtropical area, it becomes covered with red leaves in autumn.

Around late October and early November, entire slopes are scattered with orange, yellow and red leaves, making it a colorful place for hiking.

Famous since ancient times for its remoteness and beautiful scenery, Yuelu Mountain is dotted with historic sites including Yuelu Academy(岳麓书院), Aiwan Pavilion(爱晚亭), Lushan Temple(麓山寺) and Yunlu Palace(云麓宫).

Yuelu Academy plays a central role in the region’s history. Established during the Northern Song Dynasty, Yuelu Academy is a prestigious institution for higher education and academic activities. The line “the Kingdom of Chu, unique home of the talents; the Academy of Yuelu, the very cradle of all” is engraved on the entrance of the academy.

Built in 1792, the Aiwan Pavilion became famous because Mao Zedong liked reading there. Shaded amid trees and grass, it is naturally also one of most pleasant spots in autumn.

山行

远上寒山石径斜,

白云生处有人家。

停车坐爱枫林晚,

霜叶红于二月花。

Mountain Travel

Far away on the cold mountain, a stone path slants upwards,
In the white clouds is a village, where people have their homes.
I stop the carriage, loving the maple wood in the evening,
The frosted leaves are redder than the second month’s flowers.
