By Zhiyu Wang

The hills and rivers in the capital of Shandong Province are not all they seem.

The hills and rivers in the capital of Shandong Province are not all they seem.

Located in the northwestern Shangdong, Jinan is a 4000-year old city flanked by hills and the Yellow River. Called the City of Springs, it has many bubbling artesian wells whose waters flow north towards Daming Lake and the Yellow River.

Here are three places we recommend visiting.

Jinan has been famous since ancient times for its 72 springs and Baotu Spring, the most well-known, was once visited by the Qianlong Emperor himself who declared it “the best spring under heaven.” The best season for visiting is summer, when the stone-tiled floor and spring water offer a welcome reprieve from the heat.

Best time to visit: June – August

Opening hours: 07:00 a.m. – 22:00 p.m.

Located in the eastern part of the city, Daming Lake Park is an incredible natural lake formed by numerous springs. There are boats for rent and the willow-lined, lotus-dotted landscape attracts visitors from around the world. Most of the park’s ancient features were renovated after 2007.
