Tongdao in Hunan is a prefecture-level county inhabited by the Dong people.

Tongdao County is surrounding by red mountains and meandering rivers. The place was a historic corridor between the Chu and Yue kingdoms, and preserves sites and stories from ancient times.

1. Wanfo Mountain 万佛山

Wanfo Mountain lies in the heart of a 168-square-kilometer-long Danxia Landform area in Tongdao, Hunan. It occupies 100 square kilometers, with its highest peak reaching 635m. Wanfo Mountain, or Ten Thousand Buddhas Mountain, is named after its numerous Buddha-shaped peaks which face the same direction. It is also known for the red 100-meter-tall rocks sculpted by wind, rain and time into extraordinary shapes.

Yutou Ethnic Dong Village is a well-preserved ethnic architectural complex containing buildings that date back to the Ming and Qing dynasties. Lying at the foot of mountains, the village, inhabited by 182 Dong families, is silent and idyllic. Dong folklore and beautiful scenery attract tourists from home and overseas.

3. Yudai River 玉带河

Yudai River(玉带河), meandering around Wanfo Mountain, has vast areas of pristine water. Taking a raft downstream is the best way to experience the region.

4. Helong Yan 合拢宴

The Helong Yan, or Collective Feast, shows the hospitality of the Dong minority. It is a unique custom created specifically for guests, with every family sitting at a long table and local dishes — including pickled fish, pickled meat, fragrant oiled tea and rice wine — are prepared.
